Bel Angeles

I explore the intersections of art, social justice, claiming space and sharing space.  While I explore ways to integrate soul into my art, I continue a parallel journey of solidarity, community and inclusion. I create mostly studio art, and engage in collaborative art making through a collective of artists in the Global Art Project (GAP). I am also passionate about local community and volunteer with local social justice groups.  I’ve spent most of my working life as an international humanitarian aid worker, working with refugees and internally displaced people with a focus on gender issues.  I am a self- taught artist, mentored by several creative practitioners and instead of a Fine Arts degree, I have a Master’s Degree in Development Studies.  I usually start intuitively, often gravitate towards abstract expressionism, mark-making, layering and texture.  In the later stages of creation I bring a more analytical eye, and often interpret my art through a lens of core-periphery, marginality and inclusion.
